Improving Outcomes

Approximately half of the Australians and New Zealanders diagnosed with cancer (over 100,000) each year could benefit from radiation therapy and no other treatment can replace radiation therapy in achieving the same benefit and cost-effectiveness for patients with cancer*.

  • Non-invasive: Many radiation therapy treatments are non-invasive and most are delivered in the outpatient setting, i.e. without being admitted to hospital. Each visit for treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes which means that most patients can continue with normal daily activities.
  • High success rates: Radiation therapy is a part of the treatment program in around 40% of all patients cured of their cancer* and also has a very important place in helping patients with cancer that cannot be cured.
  • Improving quality of life: In patients with advanced cancer, radiation therapy is commonly used to shrink tumours, providing relief from pain and other symptoms, which is vital for improving a cancer patient’s quality of life.
  • At the forefront of technology: The field of Radiation Therapy is advancing quickly and new innovations mean that radiation treatment is now more precise and accurate than ever before. At Genesis CancerCare NSW we have innovations at the forefront of the field, including Australia’s first Gamma Knife for the non-surgical treatment of brain malignancies, prostate hydrogel to reduce side effects during prostate treatment and Deep Inspiration Breath Hold which reduces risk to the heart in patients with left sided breast cancer.
